ChurchKloštar Ivanić -
the oldest settlement in this area today counts about 2500 inhabitants. It was
in possession of Zagrebian bishops since the foundation of the diocese in 1094.
Written documents reveal us that bishop Stjepan II Babonić has built the Church
of St. Mary and monastery between 1227 and 1242. From 1246 to 15th century the
monastery was the home of Benedictines, and in 17th century, when
the danger ceased, it was restored.
The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed
Wirgin Mary is one of our oldest shrines of the Virgin Mary all over the
Country. In the middle of 18 th century the church was enlarged and baroqued.
Franciscans took over the Church in 1936 and built new vicarage and monastery
with hall and library. Church of St.John the BaptistUntill then Franciscians had a monestary near the St.
Nicolas Church (destroyed in 1944), for they came in Kloštar Ivanić in 1508
invited by bishop Luka Baratin and there they constructed a large gothic
monastery. They left Kloštar to avoid Turkish invasion in the mid 16th century,
and returned there in 1639 during the diocese of Benedikt Vinković. Since 1719
the monastery includes moral theology and since 1670 a pharmacy.
In 1850 the
church tower was chosen to be the central point for the first land measuring in the Kingdom of Croatia and
Slavonia. The Church is still under reconstruction and after the earthquake in
1969 Trappists from Banja Luka stayed there, and were replaced by Carmelites
upon returning home.
Old pharmacyToday the Kloštar Ivanić Municipality has a population of
about 6000, mainly engaged in agricultural-vegetable production, fruits and
grapevine growing, and horse breeding is developing. Kloštar Ivanić is the
headquarters of the Posavac Horse Breeders Union, aiming to preserve and
develop this autochthonous Croatian horse.
The most significant feasts are: The
Municipality Kloštar Ivanić Day - on St. John Day, June 24th, with annual fair
and exhibition of horses and decorated carriages; on August 15th ceremonies honoring
Mother Mary with pardoning and welcoming pilgrims; in August "tamburijada"
(Competition of traditional instrument - tambura
players), and in December celebration of the St. Nicolas Day and Christmas
holidays. There are also celebrations on St. Vincent Day, honoring traditional
customs related to vintage and harvest. KUD (Cultural- Artistic Club) "Kloštar"
preserves and cares for the folklore tradition of the area, and there are also
Kloštar Majorettes.
